- The Report -
(by TakagiNaoSama)
To bring you coverage
from Reactor this year, DCM braved sickness, weather and the longest drive
to a con ever taken from our hometown of Pittsburgh, PA. The Purple Hotel
left much to be desired in the way of service, space and basic amenities,
which caused the con to suffer. The convention space was almost too small to
accommodate the number of attendees, the Dealer's Room was so cramped you
had to stand in line to get in, and video and panel rooms were nowhere to be
found. The game room was a disgrace once it was actually located, stuck in
the corner of the lobby and was the size of a standard hotel room. Its only
redeeming factor was a DDR machine and the fact that Soul Calibur II graced
at least one TV screen every time we dared to peek our heads in.
Despite the cold, rainy weather, many cosplayers were more than happy to
join us outside for photoshoots in the tiny green courtyards. Thanks goes
out to everyone who withstood the cold for us and posed happily while we did
our job of making you guys and girls look so good in your awesome costumes!
When you have fun, we have fun!
Speaking of costumes, the Saturday night costume contests were spitting
images of last year's events. The "FANtabulous" walk-on competition was once
again filled with impressive costumes and enthusiastic cosplayers. The
insanely large group of Naruto cosplayers from 2004 was replaced with
slightly smaller groups of original characters from the same series, as well
as InuYasha and Yugioh. It left nothing to be desired, except for maybe
proper judging and a more punctual start. "Cosplay Idol" had more prepared
participants than last year and just as much alcohol. (We highly recommend
watching last year's Cosplay Idol before this year's) As always there was
the good, the bad and the outstanding. The audience roared with laughter for
several hours, though the humor was even more adult oriented than last
year's event. Reappearing faces and familiar themes kept the fanboys and
girls squealing in delight. Stripper Vash made his return as an unexpected
character, but everyone's favorite CardCaptor kept his pants on this
weekend, even for Saturday's late night Hot Body Contest (but it didn't
phase Stripper Vash and his friends).
Overall Reactor had its goods and its bads, as does every convention, but
sadly the negatives just seemed to outweigh the positives this time around.
Thank goodness for the friendly cosplayers, silly skits and randomly
appearing DCM fangirls (thanks, Delta!) DeathCom Multimedia may or may not
be returning to this con next year, but fear not Chicago cosplayers, we'll
definitely be in your area again for one con or another ;)
