Katsucon 2006 Report
by
TakagiNaoSama
We arrived at the Omni
Shoreham hotel in Washington DC on Friday morning and were both surprised
and not surprised to see the beautiful lobby packed full of Narutards. We
knew it was going to be a long weekend...
"You can't stand there...Please move to the side of the hallway...I'm sorry
but you can't film here...We need to keep the lobby open, please..." Those
are just a few of the demands we were overwhelmed with by Katsucon security
throughout the entire weekend. Some referred to them as the Security Nazis;
We just tried our best to stay clear of them during photoshoots and the even
more difficult FanCam. Costumers and photographers alike gathered in huge
packs to combat their requests, sometimes simply refusing to move. Security
eventually resorted to standing directly between costumer and photographer!
It was quite a mess, and the blame can partially be pointed at the fact that
the hotel really wasn't prepared to handle an anime convention of Katsucon's
size.
Props goes to the gameroom staff as they setup two rooms this year, complete
with everything fighting, music, dancing and old school fans alike could
enjoy. There were even 25 free-play arcade machines! My personal favorite
gameroom experience though was seeing Carmen Sandiego playing the arcade
machines XD (check out my Sunday photos ;)
The Saturday night masquerade ran very smoothly, and we only had a little
trouble getting a place to set up. Chad still takes the prize as the most
accommodating press guy of any con, though he only managed to come through
at the last minute this time. The masquerade participants and audience were
as lively as ever, and I was personally glad to see Rob make his return as
MC (not that I didn't love the MC from the past two years!!) The skits were
overall not quite as impressive as previous Katsucons, but there were still
some gems, and kudos go out to everyone who had the courage and dedication
to get up on stage!
While this was my first Katsucon, it was DeathCom Multimedia's sixth. I hear
it was much better security-wise than last year, but improvements still need
to be made (namely a hotel that's been properly informed of what exactly
they're in for). The location was beautiful, however, as you can see from
our photoshoots. The courtyard was gorgeous, and we'd like to thank the
cosplayers who withstood the cold temperatures to get photos there. You will
not be disappointed!
