Report by TakagiNaoSama
We've been to more Otakons than we can count anymore. The guys keep
insisting on going back every year. I, however, can't figure out why we keep
going...
Attending Staff: DeathCom, TakagiNaoSama, Delrog, Mach13, Tim
Con staff
(Our experiences with the convention staff overall, including event
coordinators, press heads, and of course security.)
Otakon staff and DCM have never exactly been best friends. We were able to
get press easier this time than some recent years, but they still refuse to
budge when it comes to recording the cosplay. We're done fighting with them.
Delrog did want to separate the con's medical staff from this score,
however, and wanted to give a special shoutout to them. He said they were
the nicest and most concerned staffers he'd ever dealt with at a con.
Average Score: 35%
Hotel & Hotel staff
(The quality of the hotel, ease of check-in, and the friendliness and
helpfulness of the staff.)
Except for a couple problems first checking into the hotel, everything went
pretty smoothly.
Average Score: 73%
Masquerade Technical
(Just about every aspect of the masquerade except the actual skits. The MC,
technical, judging, timing, etc. Basically everything the convention staff
had control over.)
Otakon has always had a good technical staff. Music is always on time and
correct, the MC is competent, and the whole show always runs very smoothly.
Average Score: 94%
Masquerade Talent
(The quality of the skits themselves. The variety, innovation, fresh
content, and entertainment value of the show overall.)
Pretty good turnout this year. Too bad the world has to forever watch them
in shitty YouTube quality >:(
Average Score: 84%
Gameroom
(The size of the room, number of machines/consoles, location, and overall
presentation of the gameroom.)
Otakon's gameroom is the best in the country. The biggest, loudest, most
variety, and visually stunning. We all agree. The reason it got such a low
score however is because it closed at midnight!! WTF!?!
Average Score: 88%
Dealer's Room
(The size of the room, number of merchants, variety of merchandise, hours of
operation, location, lighting, etc.)
Nothing to complain about here. Otakon has always had one of the biggest and
best dealer's rooms.
Average Score: 96%
Artist Alley
(The location and size of the alley, placement of the artists, variety of
art, etc.)
DeathCom was the only one to actually make it to Artist Alley this Otakon,
but he gave it a pretty good score.
Average Score: 85%
Overall
(This is our entire con experience including all of the above and everything
else that goes into a con weekend combined.)
You wouldn't think everyone's overall score would be that bad considering
all the good reviews above, but a combination of drama and fighting with the
con staff brought the score way way down. Still, Otakon remains the favorite
con to attend for most of DCM staff.
Average Score: 48%
