This year's Katsucon was
covered by the DeathCom Multimedia Second Unit. Their limited
capabilities meant that sadly, there will be no masquerade footage this
year. However, their complete photo coverage is online now. |

Unfortunately,
DeathCom Multimedia as a whole wasn’t able to attend Katsucon 2008. Of
course, we couldn’t let the cosplayers down so we had to form the DeathCom
Multimedia Second Unit. We were unable to provide full coverage, but did our
best in helping out the cosplayers get the photos they need.
This was Katsucon’s last year at the Omni Shoreham and the hotel staff was
as intrusive as ever. This time they even went so far as to disallow people
to use the Do Not Disturb signs for their rooms and even walked into rooms
randomly to do quick room checks, assessing penalties for more than four
people to a room. On the other hand, Katsucon staff didn’t seem as anal this
year as they have previous years. There was much less yelling at cosplayers
for ‘being in the way of traffic’ and they seemed much more cooperative in
general.
The Katsucon game room, second only to Otakon’s, was really well put
together. They even had arcade sticks available for certain fighting games
as well as a free play retro arcade. The rooms were well ventilated, air
conditioned, and there was plenty of space for everyone to spread out.
Couches were even put along the walls for people to relax on.
This year’s dealers room was the same as ever in the dim, closed off parking
garage, but a lot of dealers seemed worried about the move Katsucon is
making for next year. A few of the dealers we know weren’t even there this
year because of declining sales.
Sadly, because of Second Unit’s small size, DeathCom Multimedia wasn’t able
to get it’s usual video coverage of the masquerade and fan cam, but
congratulations to all the winners!
Overall, this year was just another usual Katsucon. Inside it was a little
overcrowded but outside was unusually warm and very sunny all weekend!
Speaking of weather, it was wonderfully warm for this time of year. But we
have a big change in store for 2009 when Katsucon makes the move back to the
Hyatt Regency Crystal City.
